چکیده

In the following, it is proposed to calculate the induced diamagnetic moment due to the free electrons in a metal, using, instead of the classical assumptions of elastic collisions, the recently developed wave-nature of the electron and the Fermi statistics. The problem resolves itself into three parts: to find (1) the /,' functions for an electron in a lattice for the case of small perturbations by the atoms of the lattice, (2) the induced magnetic moment derived from the V/ functions and its dependence on the energy, (3) the total induced magnetic moment, which will then be obtained by applying the statistics for a degenerate system. The form of the y6 functions is most easily obtained by solving the wave equation by the ordinary perturbation methods, with the potential due to the lattice playing the part of a perturbation.

Relaxation properties in classical diamagnetism Relaxation properties in classical diamagnetism

It is an old result of Bohr that, according to classical statistical mechanics, at equilibrium a system of electrons in a static magnetic field presents no magnetization. Thus a magnetization can occur only in an out of equilibrium state, such as that produced through the Foucault currents when a magnetic field is switched on. It was suggested by Bohr that, after the establishment of such a non...

Equilibrium and Kinetic Studies on Lead (II) Adsorption by Sugarcane Bagasse Derived Activated Carbon (TECHNICAL NOTE)

Municipal and industrial wastewater contain a lot of contaminants. The major contaminants of concern are heavy metals. Heavy metals are known to be toxic, non-biodegradable and have a long half-life. The release of untreated wastewater containing heavy metals can cause serious problems to human, plants and animals. In this study, activated carbon was developed from sugarcane bagasse and its eff...

Magnetic frustration of graphite oxide

Delocalized π electrons in aromatic ring structures generally induce diamagnetism. In graphite oxide, however, π electrons develop ferromagnetism due to the unique structure of the material. The π electrons are only mobile in the graphitic regions of graphite oxide, which are dispersed and surrounded by sp3-hybridized carbon atoms. The spin-glass behavior of graphite oxide is corroborated by th...

How can [Mo(IV)(CN)6](2-), an apparently octahedral (d)(2) complex, be diamagnetic? Insights from quantum chemical calculations and magnetic susceptibility measurements.

Quantum chemical calculations are employed to elucidate the origin of a puzzling diamagnetism for a hexacyanomolybdate(IV) anion, [Mo(CN)6](2-), which was previously reported by Szklarzewicz et al. [Inorg. Chem., 2007, 46, 9531-9533]. The diamagnetism is surprising because for the octahedral (d)(2) complex one would rather expect a (paramagnetic) triplet ground state, clearly favored over a (di...

Electron magnetohydrodynamic turbulence in a high-beta plasma. I. Plasma parameters and instability conditions

The interaction of a dense discharge plasma with a weak external magnetic field has been studied experimentally. The electron pressure exceeds the field pressure and forms a magnetic hole in the plasma interior. The ions are unmagnetized, while the electrons are in a transition regime from none to full magnetization. The electron confinement changes from Boltzmann equilibrium to magnetic confin...
